Jacques Kallis picked up the highest price for a South African at the Indian Premier League auction, eventually going for R9.7 million.

The Kolkata Knight Riders paid that price for the premier all-rounder and they also bought the services of another South African, Morne Morkel, for R4.9m.

But the biggest spenders on the day were the Delhi Daredevils.

Having retained none of their players from last season, Delhi made sure they secured the services of England outcast, Kevin Pietersen.

Pietersen will join the Daredevils for R15.9m, making him the most expensive overseas player, while India’s Dinesh Karthik also signed – for R22.1m. South African duo Quinton de Kock and JP Duminy were bought for R6.2m and R3.2m, respectively – also by Delhi.

Yuvraj Singh was the most expensive buy when he joined the Royal Challengers Bangalore from the now-defunct Pune Warriors for R24.8m.

After being retained by Bangalore, AB de Villiers will welcome Albie Morkel to the side after the Titans all-rounder was bought for R4.2m.

T20 international captain Faf du Plessis will play for Chennai Super Kings, who purchased him for R8.4m.

A player who will miss out on this year’s IPL is Chris Morris, who will be out for six months after ankle surgery. Last season, Morris fetched R6.8m at the auction, signing for the Super Kings, where he went on to take 15 wickets. - Cape Argus
