CAPE TOWN – Following the dramatic semi-final defeat suffered by the Proteas Women team at the World Cup, there will at least be one South African involved in Sunday’s final between England and India.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) have congratulated one of their senior umpires Shaun George on his appointment as one of the on-field match officials for Sunday’s ICC Women’s World Cup final between India and England, which will be played at the iconic Lord’s in London.

The 49-year-old George hails from Port Elizabeth, and played representative cricket for Eastern Province and Transvaal under the non-racial auspices of the South African Cricket Board during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

George, who is currently affiliated with Border Cricket as an umpire, has also stood in 29 ODIs and 24 T20 internationals in men’s cricket, and is the reigning CSA Umpire of the Year, as well as the Umpires’ Umpire of the Year.

“Shaun also handled the semi-final between Australia and India, and follows in the footsteps of our senior umpire Marais Erasmus, who officiated in the recent ICC Champions Trophy final. It shows in what high regard our match officials are held by both players and administrators,” said CSA chief executive Haroon Lorgat.

“Shaun and Adrian Holdstock are both members of the ICC International Panel, and both have had excellent World Cups, with Adrian also officiating in one of the semi-finals.

“We wish Shaun everything of the best for this important and special day in his career. It is going to be a wonderful moment when he walks out in front of a capacity crowd at this famous ground for a World Cup final.”

The other on-field umpire will be Gregory Brathwaite of the West Indies, and the Women’s World Cup final will start at 11.30am on Sunday.
