Spain's Oscar Freire, a three-time world champion, will race for Katusha next season, the Russian team announced on Thursday.

Paris – Spain's Oscar Freire, a three-time world champion, will race for Katusha next season, the Russian team announced on Thursday.

The 35-year-old had raced for Dutch outfit Rabobank since 2003.

“I know a lot of the Katusha riders and I am very motivated for the next season,” said Freire, a world champion in 1999, 2001 and 2004 and a four-time stage winner on the Tour de France.

In his new team, Freire will join up with Germany's Erik Zabel, who has been named as advisor to the sprinters as well as Russian Denis Galimzyanov, the winner of September's Paris-Brussels. – Sapa-AFP
