Johannesburg – Long-hitter Merrick Bremner shot a blistering eight-under-par 64 to equal the course record in the first round of the SA Open at Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate in Kempton Park on Thursday.

Bremner was out in the morning, teeing off just after 7am, and got off to a perfect start. Starting on the first hole, he opened up with two birdies in a row before adding another four ahead of the turn to go out in six under.

Coming home he said he played more conservatively, throwing in two birdies on the two par-fives.

“I played fantastically on the first nine, didn't miss a green,” Bremner said.

“The only chance that I had that wasn't makeable was on 15. The rest were within 10 feet, so in theory I could have shot 28 on the front.”

Scotland's Craig Lee was the closest of the morning field with a 67, while Charl Schwartzel was four shots behind with an opening 68. – Sapa
