Johannesburg – Merrick Bremner completed his weather-interrupted second round on Saturday, firing a 70 and finishing 10 under at the halfway stage of the South African Open at Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate in Gauteng.

Leader by three shots, Sweden's Henrik Stenson had an early tee off on Friday and was not affected by the inclement weather which halted play in the afternoon.

“I think we were quite fortunate that we got called off yesterday. The wind was blowing really hard,” said Bremner after the completion of his second round.

“It was a good thing that we went off and got some rest and then got to come out and finish these four holes. And now we get a nice long rest before going out this afternoon.”

Swede Magnus Carlson was a further shot behind Bremner, on nine under, after completing his round on Friday.

Charl Schwartzel shot a second successive 68 and ended on eight under par, along with Lloyd Saltman of Scotland.

“It was an early start this morning. I was disappointed yesterday, because I got it going nicely and then that weather came in,” said Schwartzel.

“As the weather changed I made bogey and they called it off. I went to sleep last night with not a very nice feeling.

“I was quite determined to come out this morning and see if I could get it to at least eight-under, which I did. I’m very pleased with that and I put myself right back in it there.”

The cut came at one under par, notably with defending champion Henni Otto just making it on the number.

The third round began at 10.30am, with players going off two tees. – Sapa
