Pinehurst, United States – Germany's Martin Kaymer birdied the par-4 third hole to seize a six-stroke lead during the final round of the US Open at Pinehurst.

Kaymer opened with two pars, the second saved with a 10-foot putt, then drove the green at the third and left an eagle putt two feet from the cup before tapping in to reach nine-under par for the championship.

Sharing second was Kaymer's playing partner in the last group, American Rickie Fowler, plus American Erik Compton and world number two Henrik Stenson of Sweden.

Compton, who has been the recipient of two transplanted hearts, opened with three pars, as did Fowler.

Stenson birdied the third to join the chase pack. He could overtake top-ranked Adam Scott of Australia with a victory. – Sapa-AFP
