Louisville – England's Justin Rose and Danny Willett made early charges up the leaderboard in Saturday's third round of the PGA Championship, showing low scores were for the taking at rain-soaked Valhalla.
Willett, who began the day one-under for the tournament, was four-under through four holes after making a seven-foot birdie at the second and a 10-foot birdie at the third, then holing a 50-footer from just off the green for eagle at the par-4 fourth.
Rose dropped 30-foot birdie putts at the first, third and seventh holes plus a four-foot birdie at the fourth and a 16-foot birdie at 13 to stand five-under for the day and the event.
Both Englishmen were four strokes off the pace set by Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, who was set to tee off in the final group of the afternoon.
Willett, ranked 99th, took his lone title at the 2012 BMW International Open on the European Tour. The 26-year-old from Sheffield has four top-10 efforts this season, his best showing a share of third at the Irish Open.
World number five Rose, who won his first major title at last year's US Open, captured the US PGA National and followed up two weeks later with a victory at the Scottish Open. – Sapa-AFP
