Independent Media’s Lungani Zama this week walked away with two prestigious awards in South African sports journalism when he won the “Columnist Of The Year” and “Sports Feature Writer Of The Year” categories at the SAB Sports Media Awards.

A specialist cricket writer, but also a hugely talented multi-sport journalist, Lungani’s stand out year was marked by his excellent coverage of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games for the Independent Media group’s national print titles and IOL Sport digital platforms.

“Though the writers get the accolades, we know that every single edition is a team effort. Our design and editing teams worked long hours, particularly during the Rio Olympics, and turned our stories into works of art for the public. These awards are as much a reflection of their dedication and passion as they are mine,” Zama said of his achievements.

“I’m also hugely indebted to a group of sports editors who continue to challenge us to do more, especially on overseas tours, which help to elevate the Independent Media stable above others in terms of unique coverage,” he added.

The head of Independent Media’s sports business unit, Jermaine Craig, hailed Zama’s achievements as worthy recognition of his efforts this year and a boost for the group.

“I would like to congratulate Lungani on his outstanding achievements, which are richly deserved. He is a classy, world-class writer who epitomises the quality and standard of sports writing Independent Media strives to provide its readers. We are extremely blessed to have a highly talented stable of sports writers across our group that for me are unmatched as a unit.  Lungani’s achievements are due reward for his stellar efforts and a huge boost for our entire Independent and IOL Sport team,” said Craig.
