Washington – Banned U.S. swim coach Rick Curl has been charged with child abuse after allegations of a sexual relationship with an underage swimmer in the 1980s.

The Washington Post reports that the 63-year-old Curl turned himself in to police in suburban Montgomery County, Maryland, on Thursday. He was released on $50,000 bond and faces a November 16 preliminary hearing on the felony charge.

Kelley Davies Currin says Curl started a relationship with her in 1983 when she was 13. It lasted for several years until discovered by her parents. They settled the case with Curl rather than pursuing criminal charges, a decision she now regrets.

Curl's attorneys call him a “devoted father and husband” who over three decades “successfully coached hundreds of young men and women.” – Sapa-AP
