Cape Town - The Schools Sport Summit will be a major drawcard at the Cape Argus Sport Show next year and should prove a must for anybody involved with sport at school level.

The event will take place at the show on March 26 and 27 and aims to provide insight into common issues related to schools sport and physical education.

The managing director at 02 Sports, Ebrahim Moerat, founded the summit because he saw a need for a platform for sports professionals, teachers, coaches and other stakeholders to share knowledge among themselves and the public.

“A key theme next year will be physical education. We will also have transformation in school sport as a topic. In addition, we'll take a look at a coaching conundrum - focusing on private versus school-based coaches used in the schools system - and many more topics.â€ù

Moerat joined forces with the High Performance Centre from the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA) to host the inaugural summit last year. This year, the event was held at the institute and saw over 200 delegates from 110 schools in attendance.

The summit looked at the role school sports play in educating children. It also looked at whether there was scientific evidence for the positive role of sport in schools and for the broader impact it has on the lives of children. Experts identified case studies for guidance in the South African context.

This time around, an expert panel of speakers will help inform, motivate and analyse the way forward for school sport. The line-up of speakers, yet to be confirmed, are former South African cricketer Gary Kirsten, SSISA managing director Phato Zondi and manager Justin du Randt.

Registration for the Schools Sport Summit for 2017 will open by the end of October at a cost of R1 200 per person for the two-day event. It will include access to summit presentations, meals and refreshments, and access to the Cape Argus Sport Show.
