Johannesburg - Olympic gold medallist Chad le Clos secured Team SA's first gold medal at the FINA World Swimming Championships in Instanbul on Thursday evening in a Championship Record time of 48.82.

Le Clos swam a powerful race to outsprint both Thomas Shields (USA) who came second in a time of 49.54 and Ryan Lochte (USA) in a time of 49.59.

Shields had beaten Le Clos in the semi-final on Wednesday night.

The victory was a boost for the team, which had thus far failed to make it onto the podium amid tough competition.

Another notable performance came from Vanessa Mohr who made it into the semi-final of the Women's 50m Butterfly in a time of 26.16.

However, the second day of competition saw Karin Prinsloo; Lehesta Kemp (Women's 100m Freestyle); Michael Meyer (Men's 400m Individual Medley); Marne Erasmus (Women's 50m Butterfly); Leith Shankland (Men's 50m Freestyle); Rene Warnes; Amanda Loots (Women's 100m Individual Medley), Jessica Pengelly and Michelle Weber (Women's 800m Freestyle) all failing to make it out of their heats.
