Johannesburg – Entries for the 20th running of the Soweto Marathon have opened, Athletics South Africa confirmed on Monday.

The national governing body for the sport said it expected “just under 20 000 runners to compete in the marathon and all other sub events”.

For the first time this year, the 10km wheelchair race, 5km fun run and 10km walk will all be held the day before the 42.2km standard marathon.

The main race and the 10km run/walk will be held on November 4.

South African Michael Mazibuko won last year's annual marathon in the historic township in two hours, 19 minutes, four seconds (2:19.04).

Mamorallo Tjoka of Lesotho won the women's race, securing her fifth Soweto title in 2:43.40. – Sapa
