Johannesburg - Tanika Hoffman clinched a silver medal in the women's division as the South African surfing team finished fourth in the ISA China Cup at Riyue Bay, in the South China Sea, on Monday.

The invitational event featured the top seven International Surfing Association (ISA) surfing nations and a team from hosts China for the first time.

Hoffman, who is one of the country's most experienced female surfing competitors, earned a well-deserved first medal in her sixth appearance in national team colours.

She marched undefeated from the first round into the grand final in China, and led the decider for the first 20 minutes.

However, she struggled to find a high-scoring backup wave and slipped to second place behind Milushka Tello of Peru in the dying moments of the encounter.

In the men's division, Michael February was the best South African performer.

The Kommetjie resident reached the third round of the qualifying stream before being relegated to the repechage rounds.

There he survived one further round before being ousted in seventh position overall.

Faye Zoetmulder was the next best South African, placing equal ninth in the women's division.

Casey Grant finished his campaign in 15th place, while Dylan Lightfoot was 17th. David Brand ended in 21st spot.

Peru won the team gold medal with Australia in second place and Brazil in third. South Africa placed fourth.
