SOCHI, Russia - India has returned to the Olympic fold after the International Olympic Committee lifted a ban on the country's Olympic Association, a source close to the decision told Reuters on Tuesday.

Indian athletes have been competing at the Sochi Winter Games under the Olympic flag due to the country's suspension.

The suspension had been imposed after the IOA proceeded with its December 2012 election in which Lalit Bhanot, who spent 11 months in jail on corruption charges, was voted in as secretary general.

The IOC subsequently offered a lifeline for the dithering IOA to bar all tainted officials from contesting its elections and elect new ones.

On Sunday the IOA elected a new set of officials. — Reuters
