Durban – Olympic gold medalist Chad Le Clos won a record-equalling seven titles at the national swimming championships which closed in Durban this weekend.

The 21-year-old, who stunned American superstar Michael Phelps to win the 2012 London Games 200-metre butterfly, entered eight events in his home city.

And he won the 200m butterfly (1 min 54.56 sec), 200m freestyle (1:48.43), 200m backstroke (1:57.93), 200m individual medley (1:57.94), 100m freestyle (49.38), 100m butterfly (52.14) and 400m individual medley (4:14.81) finals.

Le Clos (23.86) had to settle for second place behind fellow Olympian Roland Schoeman (23.11) in the 50m butterfly at the Kings Park Aquatic Centre.

The seven-title haul matched those of his coach, Graham Hill, and Sydney 2000 Olympics silver medalist Terence Parkin.

Le Clos also secured places at five 2014 Commonwealth Games events in Glasgow – his 100m freestyle and 200m freestyle winning times did not meet the qualifying marks. – Sapa-AFP
