Johannesburg – It was the turn of Nico Meyer to impress with two gold medal performances on the penultimate day of the South African Short Course Swimming Championships at the GC Jolliffe Pool in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday.
The 21-year-old led from the start of the men's 100m freestyle to win in a fast 49,97sec – edging out a strong challenge from Luke Pendock who clocked 50,30sec while Calvyn Justus sneaked in from the outside lane to take the bronze in 50,51sec.
Meyer then stood up to win his third title in the men's 100m butterfly, clocking another solid time of 53,95sec - with Reynard Wessels just edging out the younger Daniel Ronaldson by 0,25sec to clock 55,06sec.
Lehesta Kemp (23) won the women's 100m freestyle in an encouraging 55,85sec but was chased all the way in by 14-year-old Erin Gallagher who produced a magnificent 56,89sec for the silver medal while Marce Loubser took the bronze in 58,03sec.
In the women's 50m butterfly, Tayla Lovemore earned her first senior gold with an excellent 28,07sec victory. Jamie Reynolds was close for the silver in 28,39sec with Odile Dauvellier finishing third in 28,97sec.
Jared Pike was also in fine form as he raced to a sound victory in the men's 100m breaststroke, recording a 1:00,75 to win comfortably from Adam Stevenson in 1:01,94 and Lee Geeson in 1:02,25.
In the remaining sprint events, it was Neil de Villiers who struck gold in the men's 100m individual medley in 55,98sec ahead of a close chasing group in Joshua Steyn who stole the silver in 56,33sec from Wesley Morris in 56,46sec. In the women's 100m IM, Jolandi Els edged out Rene Warnes by 0,45sec to win in 1:03,61 with Marce Loubser taking her second bronze medal of the evening in 1:05,32.
Joshua Steyn made up for his silver in the 100m IM as he took on the men's 400m freestyle challenge from Reynier Pretorius. Steyn won by 1,53sec in 3:55,76 with Andrew Ficher third in 4:01,67.
In the women's 400m freestyle, Bianca Hauzer survived a late challenge to win in 4:27,81 while Carmen le Roux took the silver in 4:28,15 and the bronze was shared in a dead-heat with Tasmin Tennant and Carmel Billson in 4:28,46. – Sapa
