Pietermaritzburg - The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government does not have the money to fund the Commonwealth Games due to be held in Durban in 2022.

KwaZulu-Natal finance MEC Belinda Scott said on Wednesday, when delivering the provincial budget, that the provincial treasury had approached the national treasury for assistance.

“At this point I need to state that at this present moment this province is not in a position to fund the Commonwealth Games, which is a national event.” She said the provincial government needed to focus on serving communities.

“Provincial treasury has escalated this matter to the National Treasury for urgent national intervention, in order that national government is made aware that they will need to make provision for funding this funding pressure.”
