Polokwane residents poured into the streets on Tuesday to celebrate with Ludwick Mamabolo, who returned home after winning the Comrades Marathon in Durban at the weekend.
A convoy about 100 metres in length stretched along the streets, with blue-light vehicles leading the way.
Mamabolo become the first South African winner of the annual ultra-marathon in seven years when he won the 89km race on Sunday.
“I am very happy he did it. We are Mamabolo's today,” said one resident who abandoned her shopping to join the celebration.
People sang at the office of premier Cassel Mathale where Mamabolo received a trophy from the provincial government.
Mamabolo’s father, Jeremiah, said his son had changed their lives.
“We have seen visitors TV cameras,” said Jeremiah Mamabolo.
“People don’t stop to visit and wish us well.”
He said his son had been a keen sportsman from a young age, playing soccer and competing in road running events.
