Johannesburg – London Olympian Karin Prinsloo led South Africa's charge on the opening night of the Aquatic Super Series in Perth on Friday.

The 24-year-old claimed two individual medals and set two South African records in the women's 100m and 400m freestyle events.

It proved to be a red-letter day for South African women's swimming, with the foursome of Prinsloo, Rene Warnes, Marlies Ross and Kyna Perreira claiming third place in the 4x200m freestyle relay.

In her first race of the gala, Prinsloo finished third in the 100m freestyle, breaking her own South African record by 0.49 seconds.

She finished behind Australia's Cate Campbell (53.08 secs) and Bronte Campbell (53.98), posting a time of 54.48.

Prinsloo, however, left the best for last as she smashed Wendy Trott's 400m freestyle record of 4:08.38 by posting a time of 4:07.92 to claim silver.

Bronte Barratt of Australia finished first in a time of 4:07.44, with compatriot Kylie Palmer taking bronze in 4:08.67.

Meanwhile, Olympic gold medallist Chad le Clos had to be content with a silver medal in his specialist 200m butterfly event.

He had to bend the knee to Japan's Daiya Seto, who touched the wall first in a time of 1:54.82, with the South African finishing second in 1:56.45. Japan's Yuki Kobori claimed the bronze medal in 1:56.85.

Distance swimmer Myles Brown finished third in the men's 400m freestyle event in a time of 3:50.54. Australia grabbed the first two places with Mack Horton winning in 3:47.98 and David McKeon second in 3:48.71. – Sapa
