Johannesburg – Gideon Sam is set to take up another four years as Sascoc president when he stands unopposed at the body's quadrennial elections in Johannesburg on Saturday.
The SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) announced in October that Sam would be challenged for the position by Premier Soccer League chairman Irvin Khoza.
Khoza, however, withdrew from the elections after his position at the football body was extended earlier this month.
“My experience is that it takes more than one term to stabilise an organisation into sustainable, winning ways,” Khoza said at the time, backing Sam for another term.
Sam, a former president of Swimming SA and Springbok team manager, has been president of the Olympic body since 2008, when he replaced former Sascoc chief Moss Mashishi.
Two Sascoc vice-presidents will also be elected on Saturday, with nine names originally submitted as nominations for these positions, including Khoza, SA Football Association president Kirsten Nematandani, and SA Rugby Union deputy president Mark Alexander.
Other candidates include incumbent vice-presidents Hajera Kajee and Les Williams, and Swimming SA president Jace Naidoo.
A total of 25 names were also submitted for the five vacant Sascoc board positions. Candidates for the five posts include sport scientist Tim Noakes and wheelchair racer Ernst van Dyk. – Sapa
