Hanover Park matric pupil Moegamat Rogers will be doing his bit for SA when he joins 19 other youngsters from 20 countries who will carry the Olympic Torch in a relay in Nottingham, England, later this month.
The Olympic Torch relay has taken place ahead of every Olympic Games since 1936.
Moegamat, who says he is very excited to be an ambassador for his school and for SA, joins many great athletes who have carried the torch over the years, including boxing legend Muhammad Ali and Australian running champion Cathy Freeman.
Moegamat is in matric at Mountview Secondary School in Hanover Park.
He and the other youngsters were selected in recognition of the work they’ve done for the International Inspiration programme, started by the British Council, Unicef and UK Sport to connect children through the inspirational power of sport.
Moegamat said in a statement released by the British Council that being involved with the programme had allowed him to develop his leadership skills, “and to make a difference in my community”.
He could not be contacted on Saturday by Weekend Argus, but said in the council statement that he was chosen by his school as a reward for his active role in promoting youth leadership and good values at Mountview Secondary.
The relay event is scheduled for June 28.
