Olympic bronze medalists, the Springbok Sevens - better known as Blitzbokke - played a friendly match against well known media personalities in aid of helping a charity of their choice at Robben Island on Thursday.

Boks for Books, the team’s charity, received R50 000 to help refurbish libraries in previously disadvantaged schools within South Africa.

The initiative was in partnership with Shoprite Checkers.

Sevens player, Stefan Dippenaar said that he was very happy to help raise funds for a cause close to his heart.

“Giving back at such a historical place is a thing I will remember forever and I am glad to have been a part of it.”

The celebrity team which included well known comedians Siv Ngesi and David Goliath drew 7-7 with the national team.

Goliath, who visited Robben Island for the first time was glad to have played against Olympic medalists.

“I embarrassed myself in front of everyone but it was fun and it was all for charity. Playing on Robben Island was a new experience for me because I got to see this wonderful self contained village.”

Ngesi said braaing and playing rugby brought people from different backgrounds together.

“I could’ve been doing something different but instead I came here to support a great cause and I am happy about my decision to do so. The event is also in celebration of Heritage Day and what better place to celebrate it at such a monumental place such as Robben Island.”
