The Bulls scored eight tries in their 61-8 annihilation of the Reds in a Super Rugby match at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

The hiding brought up memories for the Reds of the 2007 massacre when the Bulls beat them 92-3.

The Bulls hit their straps in the first half as they launched a number of successful attacks on the Reds’ defensive line.

While the ball seemed to glide smoothly through the hands as the Bulls spread it wide, a number of crucial handling errors stopped the flow and deprived the Bulls of realistic scoring opportunities.

For a team that are supposedly more inclined to play boring ten-man rugby, they showed a serious knack for an exciting running brand.

The team created enough opportunities to score and had to wait until only the 33rd minute to score their first try.

The Bulls’ accurate goal kicking flyhalf Morne Steyn was back at his best as he meticulously banged over all his attempts at goal.

He opened the scoring with a penalty conversion 10 minutes into the match after his side made a number of good attacking runs.

The visitors never really threatened the Bulls and only got onto the scoreboard at the quarter mark with centre Jono Lance succeeding with a penalty goal.

The Bulls were finally rewarded for their enterprising play with Zane Kirchner scoring in the right hand corner, with Steyn converting (16-0).

While the try line was quite elusive in the first half the Bulls seemed to find it quite easily in the second.

The Reds found themselves behind the posts only a minute after the half-time break due to a Wynand Olivier try.

After the Bulls set-up a number of phases Steyn broke the line and sold a dummy to Reds scrumhalf Will Genia, who stood hands on hips as Steyn offloaded to Oliver who scored (23-3).

The Bulls then ran in two tries within two minutes with Flip van der Merwe barging over the line in the 54minute and fiery flanker Jacques Potgieter scoring the try of the match in the 58th minute.

Potgieter got through a gap and handed off man mountain Radike Samo in the midfield running over 50metres to score under the posts, with Steyn converting.

The Bulls’ scoring spree was briefly interrupted when the Reds finally scored their first and only try of the match with Dom Shipperley touching down to take the score to 37-8.

The hosts brushed the intrusion aside as they continued their try scoring fest, running in four more tries with Jano Vermaak, CJ Stander, JJ Engelbrecht and Bjorn Basson each adding a five-pointer to their total.

Scorers: Bulls 61 (16): Tries: Zane Kirchner, Wynand Olivier, Flip van der Merwe, Jacques Potgieter, Jano Vermaak, CJ Stander, JJ Engelbrecht, Bjorn Basson. Penalties: Morne Steyn (3). Conversions: Stey(5), Louis Fouche (1x) Reds 8 (3): Try: Dom Shipperley. Penalty: Jono Lance. – Sapa
