Butch James
Joel Stransky believes that Butch James, not Morné Steyn, should be the Springboks’ first-choice flyhalf at the Rugby World Cup. And he thinks that Patrick Lambie can be considered as the starting fullback instead of at No10.
The Springbok 1995 World Cup hero believes that James is able to better vary his play, while his strong defensive ability is another plus point.
James arrived in Cape Town on Tuesday along with 48 other players for this week’s Springbok assessment camp.
“I’m not sure right now that the Boks have an idea of who that starting flyhalf is going to be. To be fair, the way he has played, it should probably be Butch,” Stransky said.
“I assume that that is the thinking, and they would probably leave him at home for the Tri-Nations tour coming up (the first Test is against Australia in Sydney on July 23).
“I, right now, would go for Butch. His ability to make decisions, to play closer to the gainline, defending that channel. All of that, plus his experience, means for me that he would be the flyhalf. Butch’s kicking game has improved dramatically since the last World Cup, and even in that tournament, he kicked out of hand really well. He looks comfortable as a goal-kicker too, and looks natural. With his experience, they won’t look past him.
“There is only one thing – whether he will stay on the field. It’s those hot-headed tackles every now and then, and he has had three or four knee reconstructions. His longevity might be an issue.”
Stransky adds that if Lions pivot James is the No1 flyhalf, the Bulls’ Steyn and Sharks playmaker Lambie should get gametime on the Tri-Nations tour. “It will be difficult circumstances as some players won’t go on tour. We will see who puts their hand up and comes to the fore. Whether they play Morné or Pat, I think you have two great players there,” he said.
“The other side of Lambie is that they will probably want to look at him as a fullback in the Test arena. In the last few Super Rugby games, he looked very good indeed at fullback.”
Sharks coach John Plumtree also agrees that Lambie can be considered at No15, although he thinks that Steyn should be the Boks’ main flyhalf at the World Cup. “I don’t think Pat should start ahead of Morné, not from an experience factor. I mean, when you get into the World Cup, you are going to need your experience in key positions,” Plumtree said on Tuesday.
“Morné has got that, and it also depends on what style of play that the Springboks want to adopt. Morné suits the style of play that they want to play. Pat’s time will come.”
But both Stransky and Plumtree feel that the Boks need a good Tri-Nations campaign if they hope to do well at the World Cup. Some top Boks who have played a lot in Super Rugby may sit out the tour, so that could result in the team struggling against the Wallabies and All Blacks.
Plumtree was adamant that the Boks should take almost a full-strength side on tour.
“I think it would be a mistake to take a ‘B’ team to New Zealand. It should be more a case of resting a few players,” he said.
“Going into the World Cup, it is crucial that they play well against Australia and New Zealand in the Tri-Nations because ultimately, if South Africa want to win the World Cup, they are going to have to beat New Zealand first and then probably Australia. So, it’s really important to get that momentum and build some confidence. They should take a very good side to New Zealand.”

@ spock@Greg aka sprog; you flatter yourself - you are not disagreeing with me, I am disagree with YOU. The reason I disagree is because the arguments that have been presented as reasons for Butch James non-inclusion in the squad are infantile, illogical & totally unreasonable. In other words, they are flawed & therefore unsustainable. If you are going to punish one person because of a perceived flaw in the way he plays, you HAVE TO apply the SAME criteria to ALL who have the same flaws in their game!! So my point is - if you are leaving Butch at home because he gives away penalties & gets yellow-carded then you HAVE to also leave behind Bakkies Botha, Schalk Burger & probably Bismark du Plessis (he doesn't get too many yellow cards, but he does tend to get carried away at times & give away penalties). Whether he should be first choice No 10 or not is not what I was commenting on, but rather the arguments for not taking him at all. As for the young Steyn, he is being touted because of his team, that is the only reason. So great, he doesn't give away too many penalties & possibly will get about 75% of his kicks over, but that is the sum total of his game. He can't control the game, he can't play when the team is going backwards, AND his current form is surely questionable. So the answer to your question is yes, you are a bunch of know-it-all's - you expect everybody to agree with you & when they don't, why you resort to insult & name calling, just like playground bullies - by the way, Mr Smart Alec, I was not bullied at school and neither did I bully anyone. You see, I was taught that everyone is entitled to their own opinions & that when voicing an opinion make sure that it is logical & reasonable. If someone disagrees, and you cannot accept their line of reasoning, agree to disagree. That is the logical thing to do.

What we NEED is a person who can put over at least 85% of all kicks. Just count the number of missed penalties and conversions so far this season - had all those gone over.......And in test match rugby every point can be a winning point. So choose whoever will make those vital kicks!!

Let me get this straight, just because we disagree with you two lovebirds, we get to be the know-alls. No wonder you got bullied at school. As krige said, don't have hatred in your heart, let it go..hahaha

Stransky is indeed somewhat tedious to listen to. If it were not for Hugh Bladen I would also opt for the Afrikaans commentary. As for Butch, he often loses his cool and causes penalties if not yellow cards. Let's face it, we do not have a Carter or a Cooper not to mention a Genia. The Boks are a lethargic bunch with very little chance of succeeding in the World Cup. It is almost as if the game has outgrown our big boys. It is a len period for the Green and Gold.

@spock 101 - thanx! there was an article on IOL just the other day that identified loud mouth, know-alls on internet forums, etc (similar to the 'brains trust' that comments here) as the typical play ground bully of their school days. unfortunately a few years have passed and everybody has grown up and able to defend themselves and kick ass just as well. the point here is the 'brains trust' has lost its menace so the only option is to be insulting on forums otherwise they'd get their asses kicked at the pub! LMFAO

Yes, the guy who won the 95 world cup for us is a moron. He made us proud that day, but he definitely should have left us with that memory of him, and not the nasal ramblings we now best know him for.I am not a Steyn (you can chose which one I'm referring too, as I regard them both with the same disdain)fan, but a flyhalf should be your leader first and foremost. The go to guy when you need direction, the guy who will make the tough calls. A lot like your quarterback(american football equivalent of a flyhalf,or at least should be,for the uneducated). Now if any of you can honestly say that James can be that guy, I will say, you are undoubtedly delusional.

Joel should continue to only comment on the 1995 Springbok team as this is about all he knows. However as an All Black supporter, I hope Peter de Villiers accepts Joel's sound advice, as Butch is worth at least four penalties to the opposition if not a yellow or red card.

So, the guy who made sure that the Springboks stayed in the game and ultimately WON the Webb Ellis trophy in 1995 is rubbish, a moron, doesn't know what he is talking about. No doubt all you detractors were still in diapers (nappies, for the uneducated)so are totally unaware of magnitude of that moment in SA Rugby history. All of you with the sole exception of Greg Shark are not voicing intelligent or halfway logical utterances. Those of you who are Morne Steyn supporters are probably also Blue Bull supporters and that is the ONLY reason you want him in. He has had a dismal season so far so why he should be first choice I have absolutely no idea. Pat Lambie has had a much better season and deserves a place in the side, Steyn is there because of the team he plays for, not because of the way he's playing. You all talk about Butch's age and say that he constantly gives away penalties; well guess what, so do Bakkies Botha, Schalk Burger AND Bismark du Plessis. Are they ALL liabilities? Should they ALL be left at home because of their penalty count. If that was a criteria for selection then most of the Stormers & Blue Bulls that are part of the preliminary group would have to stay behind. You all know that, but you want your power blue baby to go play with the big boys, so you come up with all this total snert, drivel and bovine manure!

Nice one Joel, good attempt at crowbarring lambie into the squad. The guy doesn't deserve any position in the bok squad. He's like a francois-steyn-light, more suited to provincial rugby and not good enough against quality opposition.

lots of dinosaurs on here who do not want to accept that test rugby has changed over the last couple of years. Morne Steyn is past his sell by date, he was good at the kicking game (not anymore becoz he has lost form now)- kick for touch, put it up in the air to chase e.t.c. But when you do that against NZAUS, the will completely annihilate you. You barely kick the ball out of touch, Kurtley Beale quickly throwws it to Quade Cooper and runs back at you, they will not wait for a proper line out becoz they know matfield will contest well. Kick it up and the Zack dude with the two left feet will get it and run back at you. We need a running flyhalf and James is the closest we have! We should be true to ourselves and be realistic, Morne Steyn cannot even sell a dummy or sidestep, what a flyhalf!!!

i agree with Joel, butch is the man to deal with SBW, as for all you bulls supporters ditching James about him being a liability, as well as burger, you foget you guys got a player two in bakkies botha, that has given his fair share, every province has one, just some world class players, that seem to get targeted, regardless if in the wrong or not. may the best strongest, feircest players be selected, and nulify the AB and every other team. GO BOKKE ill be supprting you no matter whose fielded. make us proud and shut these armchair so called rugby brains, up. seems to me the humble rugby supporter, are becoming more and more like those idiot english soccer(football) supporters with stupid comments

Morne is unable to play behind a losing pack and does not attack the gain line. Having said that he is a top flyhalf and is able to win matches for us. I think a Lambie or james on the bench though is able to change the game plan
