Stormers' coach Allister Coetzee has not been approached by Heyneke Meyer to form part of the Springbok coaching team.
Stormers' coach Allister Coetzee has not been approached by Heyneke Meyer to form part of the Springbok coaching team, he said on Monday.
Speaking after his team's training session in Cape Town, Coetzee denied media reports that he had spoken to Meyer about taking a job as assistant coach.
Meyer is tipped to succeed Peter de Villiers when the new national coach is named, probably on Friday.
“Heyneke never approached me,” Coetzee said.
“We last chatted about two weeks ago, but we did not speak about Springbok-related matters.”
Coetzee confirmed last week that he was not on the SA Rugby Union's shortlist for the Bok head coach's job.
The shortlist has reportedly been whittled down to two names – Meyer, the Blue Bulls' senior professional coach, and Ireland forwards coach Gert Smal.
The Afrikaans newspaper, Rapport, reported on Sunday that Meyer was the favourite for the position and that he had met with Saru CEO Jurie Roux in Pretoria last week. – Sapa

@spock101 - quite defensive, aren't you. So which desk do you occupy at IOL, or similar? You know what you can do with your sarcastic comment re me giving Meyer my blessing.

KEEP AWAY !!!!!! Please keep Coetzee as far away as possible from our Springbokss. It is a new era with new and fresh ideas.

@ Chris - perhaps you should read the papers more regularly. Smal wa indeed the favourite for the position, however, he has refused the position on the basis of family commitment. His children are happy in their school in Ireland and he does not want to disrupt their schooling. I would say that is a logical decision on his part. Therefore the second favourite, Meyer, has now moved up into the favourite position. Quite easy to understand, really. I'm sure Meyer is thrilled that his acceptance would carry your blessing.

My my - and only a couple of days ago Gert Smal was tipped as being the preferred candidate. Which makes me wonder how much the press actually know. If Meyer gets the job he will do so with my blessing, in any case.
