Tendai Mtawarira
The Sharks suffered a major setback to their 2012 Super Rugby challenge on Friday when Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira was ruled out of the game for 12 weeks following a training ground mishap.
The Sharks kick off their Super Rugby season against the Bulls on February 24, so Mtawarira is in line to miss at least the first eight matches.
He cracked the fibia bone in his right ankle when he fell awkwardly after being tackled by his captain, Keegan Daniel, and is to undergo surgery to insert a screw into the ankle.
“Obviously it is a blow,” coach John Plumtree admitted. “He is a seasoned Springbok and a big part of our plans. We will first look inwards at our squad depth before considering recruitment. We have some nice talent coming through in the front row department.”
The Sharks have trials on February 3 at King’s Park and Plumtree will be examining the performances of emerging props in Westville High old boy Dale Chadwick, Julian Redelinghuys (Monument High) and Wiehahn Herbst (Klerksdorp). There is also the possibility of Jannie du Plessis moving to loosehead, and Herbst starting at tighthead.
In a cruel act of timing, the Sharks have just bade farewell to Eugene van Staden, who has signed for French club Biarritz.
The Sharks play Boland in a friendly in Durban next week, and the next weekend conclude their pre-season with a match against the Kings in PE. - Independent on Saturday
