Johannesburg – We are rattled.
A nation scarred by the fact that the Boks haven’t won at Brisbane since 1971.
This is the opinion of Fox Sports’ Rugby HQ as they attempt to sidestep the fact that a 42-year-old record is in danger of being shattered.
The rugby show on Thursday posted an article on its website replying to The Star’s article about a video that features the show’s Sean Maloney and Andrew Swain getting the better of “South African” Office Jannie.
“Fox Sports’ Rugby HQ has struck a blow on behalf of the Wallabies ahead of their crucial clash with the Springboks on Saturday,” its headline blared.
The video shows Office Jannie braaiing on a snackwich machine and watching Invictus.
His two Aussie work colleagues eventually get the better of him by taping up the snackwich machine and splicing the Invictus video with Aussie Kurtley Beale’s winning penalty in Bloemfontein in 2010.
“It is stereotyping at its worst and smacks of desperation,” The Star said.
“Yep, the Saffas are rattled,” The Fox article retorted.
The psychological scarring is understandable. The Boks have not tasted victory over the Wallabies in Brisbane since 1971, a span that has featured eight Australian victories,” they added.
Considering Australia’s lacklustre sports performances of late – their pummelling in the Ashes, a rugby team struggling for form – it is understandable the Aussies are clawing for a psychological edge. They may come with their South African Japie, braaiing on a snackwich machine. But we all know that if Jannie was a real South African he would bring his skottle braai to work and he would be eating a decent cut of meat!
The war of words is over. It’s now time to rumble and break records.
