Cape Town – Western Province came away with a 36-23 Currie cup victory over the Golden Lions at a chilly Newlands on Saturday afternoon.
The four-try bonus point means they stand atop the Currie Cup log, one point ahead of the Sharks.
The visitors had opened the scoring with a penalty by Marnitz Boshoff in the 3rd minute (WP 0-3 Lions).
Boshoff increased the lead with another penalty three minutes later (0-6).
The home side got a break in the 16th minute when a skiddy ball from flyhalf Catrakilis was knocked on in the Lions' 22.
That eventually led to a penalty in front of the posts, which was easily converted by the pivot (3-6).
He drew the scores level with a penalty in the 25th minute after the Lions transgressed at the breakdown in their 22 (6-6).
Boshoff restored the lead two minutes later (6-9) for the visitors with another penalty.
The hosts responded in great fashion when an overlap gave Damien de Allende the space to score in the corner, the extra two missed by Catrakilis (11-9).
Province had the final say of the half as Deon Fourie crashed over under the posts, giving his side a handy nine point cushion going into the break, Catrakilis converted (18-9).
The former Southern Kings flyhalf added to his tally shortly after the resumption of play, putting over a penalty in the 43rd minute from just outside the Lions 22 (21-9).
It seemed as if Province had a spurt of inspiration during the break, as a great run by Gerhard van den Heever opened up the Lions defence for him to score a great individual try, with Catrakilis again successful with the conversion (28-9).
The Lions responded in the 56th minute with a huge rolling maul, captain Derrick Minnie thundering over the line in the corner with ball in hand to add five to their total, Boshoff adding the extra two from out wide (28-16).
A sustained passage of attack by the Joburg side eventually led to a line out just five metres from the Province try line, with a rolling maul leading to Derrick Minnie's second try of the match, Boshoff converting for a 28-23 scoreline.
Three minutes later, it was Province on the attack, substitute Kurt Coleman adding a penalty to once again extend the lead to 31-23.
With eight minutes to go, the home side lost Scarra Ntubeni to a yellow card for not rolling away from a tackle situation, having to play the remainder of the game with 14 men.
Despite being a man down, a concerted attack from the entire team taking the width of the field resulted in a try to lock Michael Rhodes, giving Province the bonus point victory (36-23).
