Peter de Villiers wants another crack at coaching the Springboks.
After the disastrous defence of their World Cup crown in New Zealand, De Villiers promised to step down when his contract expires at the end of the year.
But it seem he’s had a rethink.
And now he says he’ll reapply for the position.
If or when the SA Rugby Union (Saru) calls for applications for the position of Springbok coach, De Villiers says he will definitely be in the running.
His four-year contract as national coach expires at the end of next month and he accepts that in January he will be out of a job – but he says he will join the rest of the other aspirant coaches in applying for the position if applications are asked for.
He feels there is unfinished business among the Boks and he would love an opportunity to set it right.
There has been debate since the Boks were knocked out of the recent World Cup in New Zealand in the quarter-finals by Australia as to whether De Villiers would seek a second term, after confusion over statements he made at two separate press conferences after the 11-9 loss to the Wallabies.
At the post-match conference he said he knew it was the end of the road for him and he knew when it was time to go, which was widely interpreted as being a resignation. But after the Boks had touched down at OR Tambo, De Villiers said he had not resigned.
De Villiers’s reign has been marked by confusion with many of his comments open to interpretation.
It seems his end is going to be just as inconclusive. - Pretoria News Wekend

To The Real WTF- DIV was not made to keep John. John went to europe in 2008 and it was Div who approached him to come back to SA and play for the Springboks again. I agree that he did not get to implement the game plan he originally wanted but it seems the senior players knew how they wanted to play and perhaps it would not have worked. To be honest i dont care if te coach is a monkey riding a unicycle as long as they win...

If Div had won the World Cup, he would've been the most successful coach in SA history. Also Div had his own ideas which he was never allowed to execute primarily because senior players did not agree with his game plan, and he listened to them. He wanted to get rid of John Smit but his team said no, he listened to them. My point is that Div did very well considering the fact that he respected his team and listened. Now that the old guard has moved on, lets give Div a chance to execute his ideas, he deserves at least that much. Also I do wonder if john Mitchell would've been as successful had this not been a world cup year...just asking. PDV is absolutely a coach of international stds, ask the All Blacks who the last coach was to beat them at home, ask the British Lions. PDV has done very well. I say give him a proper chance.

Oh I can just smile about all the 'experts' here... fact is that Peter is absolutely NOT a coach of international standard, however he may just get the job again as no other coach seems to want to apply. This is what SARU gets after shafting a much more qualified coach in Heyneke Meyer for the job 4 years ago to put a black coach in charge. SARU made the job about race, so why should any non-black coach trust them not to do it again? Why go through all that trouble and then get dropkicked to the curb because you aren't black? Yeah SARU, nice work, again...

@Anonymous 11:30 - Actually, we are prepared to give another coach the benefit of the doubt because he took a team that only managed to win 3 out 16 matches in the Super 15, and escaped coming stone last only because they managed one draw, and led them to win the Currie cup a few short months later. Whereas Div took the worlds champions, and 4 years later led basically the same team, with only a few new additions, to a dismal performance in both the tri-nations and the world cup.

@umfann & Anonymous 11:30pm. Numerous complaints about SNOR are well founded and it is not because of his race. It is simply because he lacks the technical and leadership ability to coach a national team. He scored the lowest technical score out of all the applicants when he was appointed. Now tell me that was not a political appointment. You cannot blame so many for being extremely cynical, as these appointments are made on politics and not based on merit. The downward spiral of so many sports and government departments in this country are a glaring example of this nonsensical behaviour.

What is all the fuss about John Mitchell! He couldn't even win the world cup in 2003 with a star laden All Black squad but now apparently he is the best man to take S A rugby forward! What is the reason for all this nonsense, machinations and skullduggery? Is it because we don't want another black coach? Shame on you all! You are prepared to give another coach the benefit of the doubt because of the colour of his skin! Double shame!

You know what- they'll choose him again. The sooner they get a coach based on merit, the better. Unfortunately Div. has not shown to be a "merit" coach

pick the coach on merit - irrespective of colour or creed - currently - THE INCUMBENT COACH LACKS MERIT- as mentioned previously - he was blessed with a good pool of players - however - who must also take the blame for the springboks short commings.

ragauliata - i normally read comments without actually replying - but your comments are 'base' - the problem still persists that some in South Africa still think that rubgy is the preserve of a certain 'race'. can you name the springbok rugby teams of the 60's ,70's, 80's - I can - South African sport was in the Doll Drums - I wonder why!. Leave the 'race' card out.

Let's not descend this into anything to do with race - fact is this, the man is tragically inadequate. His interviews are uproariously funny - yes, but do we need a second rate accidental comedian running our national game? These days, sport is about money and sponsorship; the better a team does, the more funds become available for its development. Surely then, with the internationally acclaimed raw talent that every rugby playing nation agrees is overflowing from this country, the best thing a governing body can do is bring in the best coach it can afford - of any colour, gender, nationality or other persuasion. PDV got results based on the same player pool coached by Jake White 6 and more years ago, but they are gone, and unless we get anyone other than a buffoon on the job, so will a proud winning tradition. Look to the rise of the Lions as a blueprint for what we can once more become; and drop all of the racial nonsense. Seriously - does anyone cheer less vigourously when a black, coloured, indian or 'other' player score? No...! We simply cheer - just deliver to us a coach who can deliver wins. If he's a one-legged martian that communicates by changing colour - that's fine; as long as he or she can re-build a new team (of any colour).

Please DIV go, you job wasn't the best legacy we have. Look what a good manager did with the Lions achieved with not much resources. Look with all the talent we have by 2014 world champions again. Just retire and look after you grandchildren
