A business degree graduate with over 20 years’ experience in the private sector has been appointed as the new chief executive of the Western Province Rugby Union.

Paul Zacks, a former managing director at Canterbury International South Africa – the rugby jersey manufacturer – was announced as the successor to the retired Rob Wagner by WP Rugby on Friday.

Zacks is currently employed as the Group Head of Strategic Execution at the House of Busby, the luggage company.

He has previously worked as a general manager and vice president: rights management and licensing at Global Brands Group, and as the chief executive of Trans Africa Capital.

Zacks will begin in his new position at WP on May 1, after Gavin Lewis served as the interim CEO following the departure of Wagner.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Zacks holds degrees in business science from UCT, in taxation from Unisa and an MBA from UCT, which was obtained in 2009.

“Mr Zacks comes with a wealth of experience in the private sector, and we would like to welcome him to the Western Province family,” WP president Thelo Wakefield said in a statement.

“I am confident that he will be able to build Western Province Rugby further as we seek to achieve our vision of becoming the top rugby union in the world.

“Gavin Lewis has done a terrific job as interim CEO, and I would like to thank him for his unwavering service to the Western Province Rugby Football Union.”
