Kempton Park -

The Pumas made a winning start to their Vodacom Cup campaign thanks to a comprehensive 26-6 win over the Valke in their North Section match at the Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park on Friday afternoon.

Trompie Pretorius scored a try in each half while flyhalf JC Roos kicked 16 points, courtesy of four penalties and two conversions.

The hosts only managed two penalties from the boot of pivot Cecil Dumond.

The Pumas made a quick start as they built-up a 13-0 lead after 27 minutes.

Roos kicked an early penalty before Pretorius grabbed his first try, in the 18th minute.

Roos added the two points for a conversion before kicking his second penalty as the visitors eased into a comfortable lead.

Valke clawed their way back into the contest thanks to two penalties from Dumond as they reached the break trailing 13-6, but they failed to score any second half points as both their flanks, Vincent Gwavu and Jacques Verwey, spent time in the sin-bin for yellow card offences.

The Pumas made a strong start to the second stanza and Pretorius grabbed his second try 15 minutes after the restart with Roos once again kicking the extra points.

The 23-year-old Roos, who represented Tuks for three years in the Varsity Cup, continued to add to his personal tally and he slotted his third penalty as the Pumas galloped into a 23-6 lead after 59 minutes.

Roos then completed the scoring, in the 68th minute, thanks to his fourth penalty.

Scorers: Pumas (26): Tries: Trompie Pretorius (2). Conversions:
