Wellington - Dave Rennie returned home after coaching the Waikato Chiefs to victory in Saturday's Super Rugby final to find his house had been ransacked by thieves.

Rennie said a safe containing his wife's jewellery was taken, along with other property, and extensive damage was done to the house in Hamilton on New Zealand's North Island.

After becoming the only first-season coach to lead a team to a Super Rugby title, Rennie said “it certainly put a dampener on the night”.

The home of star centre Sonny Bill Williams was burgled during a Chiefs match earlier this season, and police are investigating whether the properties were deliberately targeted. - Sapa-AP
