A former World Rugby medical expert has claimed concussion tests in the sport ‘routinely allow brain-damaged players to play on’.

Dr Barry O’Driscoll resigned from World Rugby’s medical committee in 2012 following the introduction of the Head Injury Assessment (HIA). He said: ‘It’s damaging the game badly. It does not work. Player after player after player is going back on after damaging their brains.’

Dr O’Driscoll’s claims come as Northampton’s medical team are being investigated for allowing George North to play on last week, despite the wing having clearly lost consciousness.
