Garsfontein - Hoërskool Garsfontein in Pretoria denied having post-matric students and “mercenaries” in its first rugby team, Beeld newspaper reported on Saturday.

This followed Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool in Pretoria withdrawing from an inter-school tournament.

In a statement sent out by Hoërskool Garsfontein on Friday, the school said that there were no post-matric students in their first rugby team, the newspaper reported.

The school said a perception was created that Garsfontein pupils were held back deliberately for one academic year to have older players in the teams.

This was untrue and records would prove it, the school said.

Beeld reported that Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool said they withdrew from the tournament because of exams.
