CAPE TOWN – Springbok wing Cornal Hendricks’ planned comeback to the rugby field has ended before it started.

Hendricks, who signed a short-term contract with French giants Toulon in December, was set to remain with the club until the end of the 2016-17 season.

The 28-year-old from Wellington, who has 12 Bok Test caps and five tries to his name, was hoping to return to the sport after a heart condition kept him on the sidelines for the entire 2016 season, preventing him from starting a new chapter in his career with the Stormers.

But Toulon announced on their website on Friday that despite passing a series of medical and physical tests, it was decided “for the good of the player” that Hendricks won’t play for the club, who also have other Boks such as Bryan Habana and Duane Vermeulen on their books.
