Cape Town - It will be a nervous week for Springbok coach Allister Coetzee, with Saru president Mark Alexander saying they are yet to make a decision on the coach’s future, the rugby vultures are already circling.

Alexander admits that there are overseas candidates who have plans to get the Boks back on track. He tells City Press: “We’re not sure which way we’re going, whether we’re keeping Allister or not. We still have presentations to go through but no formal decision has been made on whether we’re going forward with him or not. At the end of January we’ll make an announcement on whether we’re keeping him.”

The president says they were hard at work during the offseason to fix the national team. He adds: “We’re still looking to see if we’ve got the right people in place and, if not, where we can find them... A lot of names have come up, a lot of overseas coaches have thrown their hats in the ring and they’ve even got plans [for the turnaround]. The agents have been busy."

The rumour mill went into overdrive, with Rassie Erasmus being linked with the job. Erasmus’ lawyer, though, Frikkie Erasmus, says the rumours aren’t true and tells Rugby365: “Rassie has a contract with Munster and won’t come here to talk to people while he is doing so well at Munster.

“He is very happy in Ireland and he doesn’t have the interference there that happens here in South Africa. He has a long stint to go on what is a very good contract.”

Coetzee’s position is under threat after winning only four matches out of a possible 12 last year.

While his record speaks for itself, Toetie also had a tour from hell at the end of the year – losing all of their matches, including a first ever defeat to Italy.
