Johannesburg - The South African Rugby Union (Saru) will brief the media on the appointment of the next Springbok coach at the Sports Science Institute in Cape Town at noon on Friday.

Blue Bulls rugby supremo Heyneke Meyer is expected to be named as Peter de Villiers’ replacement.

The Blue Bulls Company confirmed on Wednesday that Saru vice-president James Stoffberg and Saru CEO Jurie Roux had met with the Blue Bulls board earlier in the week.

Saru expressed its intent to employ Meyer as the new Springbok mentor, effectively pre-empting Friday's announcement.

This followed months of speculation regarding the favoured candidates for the position.

Meyer and Ireland forwards' coach Gert Smal were tipped as the frontrunners to replace De Villiers, who led the Springboks to the quarterfinals of last year's Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

Meyer was the favourite out of four short-listed candidates four years ago to succeed World Cup-winning mentor Jake White, but lost out to De Villiers.

Saru president Oregan Hoskins said at the time that transformation had played an important role in the appointment of De Villiers.

Meyer guided the Bulls to South Africa's first Super Rugby title in 2007 and won four Currie Cup titles with the union, lifting the Blue Bulls from the doldrums and making them one of the most successful provincial teams in world rugby. - Sapa

lets not forget that coaching a provincial team is nothing like coaching a national team...i can only imagine the drama and politicking PdV had to endure behind the scenes cause unfortunately rugby is still a game run&controlled by whites and decided in the boardrooms...i think PdV most probably is happy to be going...cant wait to read his book...cause im sure we'll hear some hair raising stuff...or they prob gagged him cause they wouldnt want a tell all book like Gibbs'...
