Sevens kit gets short shrift

While it is a fact that many South Africans see our Springboks as superheroes, the new Springbok Sevens kit takes this idea just a little too far.

The Canterbury SA-sponsored playing strip for the 2011/12 HSBC sevens World Series makes the BlitzBokke look like they’re wearing their underpants over their shorts.

The new kit is set to debut at the Gold Coast Sevens in Australia at the end if the month.

The shorts have become a hot topic on social media. On tweeter asked: “Are the @blitzbokke sponsored by a brand of adult nappies this season?” Another joked that “The Blitzbokke were accused of trying to give Superman a run for his money.”

According to reports, SA Rugby Union (Saru) was unfazed by the comments and said the team’s performance was much more important than what they wore on the field.

“The team will be playing in the traditional white shorts during the HSBC sevens World Series. The shorts worn in the pictures will only be worn during training,” Andy Marinos, Saru communications and marketing general manager, was quoted as saying. - IOL
