Rugby players at South African sports schools will be tested for steroids and other banned substances, it was reported on Sunday.

According to Rapport newspaper, 18 of 62 children independently tested in the past six months had positive results for drugs so dangerous they could lead to death.

It reported that schedule five anabolic steroids were easily obtainable on the internet, and that people were unaware of the legal implications and health hazards of using them.

The newspaper reported that the SA Institute for Drug Free Sport (Saids) had announced that more than 100 schools would test their pupils for drugs.

Paarl Gymnasium would send its entire under 19A group to be tested for doping, even though it had not had problems with steroids, its rugby head Deon Gerber told Rapport.

The Hawks national spokesman Captain Paul Ramaloko told the newspaper they were aware of the problem. - Sapa
