Stormers injury curse strikes again

The Stormers might have emerged from their match against the Lions with a lot of confidence after a 57-40 win, but the Super Rugby injury curse has struck again as wing Leolin Zas and centre Juan de Jongh might spend significant time on the sidelines due to injury.

After the match, Fleck said that Zas sustained a broken leg, adding that the medical staff suspected that the left wing fractured both his tibula and fibula just below the knee.

The Stormers’ leadership options could also be impacted as De Jongh, who served as co-captain alongside prop Frans Malherbe last season, might also rob the Cape side of midfield options as the Springbok back sustained a knee medial collateral ligament injury. Fleck could, however, not confirm the severity of the injury.

But the dual blow might have been softened as Fleck said that Bulls wing Bjorn Basson has joined the Cape side for the 2017 season, although the deal is not yet official, while former Cheetahs and Sharks fullback Joe Pietersen has also been training with the Stormers.

The Cape side begin their Super Rugby campaign against the Bulls at Newlands on February 25.
