Johannesburg – Lions lock Franco van der Merwe, who sustained a severe ankle injury during the match against the Reds, underwent surgery and will be out of action for six months, the team's medical staff said on Tuesday.

However, utility backs Coenie van Wyk and Deon van Rensburg, who took big knocks against the Reds, are expected to recover ahead of next weekend's clash against the Crusaders.

The Lions have a bye this weekend and play the Crusaders at Ellis Park on April 5. – Sapa
