South Africa’s 2013 Afcon Local Organising Committee (LOC) is worried that not all tickets for the soccer spectacle will be sold before kick-off in January.

So far, 30 000 of the available 500 000 tickets have been sold for the African Cup of Nations.

Sipho Sithole, chief communications officer for Afcon 2013, said the LOC was working hard to ensure they reach their target of selling 500 000 tickets.

“The main challenge we have is to sell 500 000 before kick-off,” said Sithole.

“Also there has been confusion at Spar and SuperSpar outlets in the purchasing of tickets, so we are addressing that.”

Tickets went on sale on September 26 and the first phase of selling ended on October 24.

Phase two began on October 25 and will end on December 20.

There will be discounts of 5 percent for category one and two and up to 10 percent for category three.

There are a number of mouth-watering clashes, including Ivory Coast v Togo in Group D. Hosts Bafana Bafana face Cape Verde in the opening game at the FNB Stadium.

Only three games will take place in Joburg – the opening two games and the final.

Sithole said fans could still get tickets for all games as none had yet been sold out. Tickets range from R60 in the group stages to R600 for the final. - The Star
