Quinton Fortune said on Monday that Safa should hire an international coach for Bafana Bafana and also questioned the enthusiasm that the association’s hierarchy has for football.

“We need an international manager, so that we can progress. The person should be given 10-15 years to build something solid,” said the former Bafana midfielder, who is in the country for the Manchester United and DHL Champions Trophy Tour.

“People running our football need to care about football. They need to leave football business to football people. We need to have the right people in the right positions.”

“Look at Zambia and Kalusha (Bwalya). He is the president of their association. He was a player and he understands football. They won the Nations Cup. We should use the experience of guys like Lucas (Radebe), Chippa (Phil Masinga) and Mark (Fish).”

Fortune described the current Bafana team as having no leadership, with just a handful of players playing in top leagues in Europe - one of the reasons Bafana is struggling.

“It’s good that the coach (Mosimane) wants to build for the future, but the team has no leadership. When I came to Bafana, there was Lucas (Radebe), Shaun (Bartlett) and other experienced players who played abroad. Bafana don’t have that now, which is why players such as Benni McCarthy, (Sibusiso) Zuma and (Siyabonga) Nomvethe should be recalled to the team.”

Gary Bailey, who is also involved in the Trophy Tour, added to Fortune’s statement on the team’s leadership by saying players should go overseas at a young age, so that Bafana can progress.

“Players these days are very happy to sit and play their football locally. They should know that being at Chiefs, Pirates or Sundowns is not where it ends in football. Bafana need to have players playing abroad,” the football analyst said.

The Champions Trophy Tour is set to start in Johannesburg tomorrow, where they parade the English Premier League Trophy that Manchester United won last season. - The Star
