Cape Town - Gavin Hunt has signed a one-year contract extension with Bidvest Wits, quashing rumours that he is set to take on the Bafana Bafana job.

With current national boss Ephraim Shakes Mashaba having failed to achieve qualification for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Gabon, it was Hunt who had been tipped in recent weeks to take over as national team boss.

There was however never any communication between Hunt and the SA Football Association (SAFA), while Hunt's agent also confirmed that no talks were ever held.

And now, according to widespread reports, Hunt has signed a one year contract extension with Bidvest Wits, making him amongst the longest serving coaches in the Premier Soccer League. In his three years with the club so far, the 51-year old has led Wits to two third placed finishes in the Absa Premiership, while last season they ended second.

He is yet to win any cup silverware, but has assembled an exciting squad including several graduates for the Students' youth academy.

Hunt, a four-time Coach of the Year winner, previously coached at SuperSport United, where he won three successive league titles.

Prior to that, he was at Moroka Swallows, Black Leopards, Hellenic and Seven Stars
