PSL championship winning coach Pitso Mosimane was named the Absa Premiership Coach of the Season at the PSL Awards in Sandton on Sunday night.
Mosimane, who led Mamelodi Sundowns to victory in the Absa Premiership title after a seven-year drought, walked away with the accolade and a cheque for R75 000.
It was Mosimane’s efforts that helped the Brazilians come from 11 points behind to beat Kaizer Chiefs and hold high the coveted trophy.
Mosimane made history by taking the team from relegation in one season to glory in the next, edging out Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter and Mpumalanga Black Aces’ Clive Barker.
He previously won the Coach of the Season award with SuperSport United in 2005.
Mosimane, a former Sundowns player, was the first black coach to take a team to victory in the Absa Premiership since the PSL’s inception in 1996. Sundowns boss Patrice Motsepe hailed Mosimane and said he was an inspiration to other coaches.
“I have huge obligations outside football to train our people and give them opportunities, and Pitso has a very good track record. It makes me feel very proud that it is one of our very own South Africans. What excites me more is that it encourages many other coaches in South Africa as well as young coaches that they have the ability to be as good as the very best in the world,” said Motsepe.
