London - British police have opened an investigation after an Arsenal fan threw a banana at Tottenham winger Gareth Bale during the north London derby.

The piece of fruit was hurled as Bale went to take a corner during the first half of the Premier League match at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

London police are now examining camera footage to try to identify the suspect.
