Accra – Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah announced a provisional 26-player squad for next January's African Cup of Nations on Thursday that did not include former captain John Mensah or Marseille striker Jordan Ayew.

The 21-year-old Ayew has been a regular in Elie Baup's Marseille side who are currently third in the French top flight and played in the 2012 team that finished fourth in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

His brother Andre Ayew was unsurprisingly included but there was no place for former Rennes, Lyon and Sunderland defender Mensah, who was in the Ghana squad that lost the 2010 CAN final 1-0 against Egypt on home soil.

Mensah is currently without a club after being released by Lyon in the off-season as Ghana attempt to win a fifth African title in South Africa and their first since 1982.

Asamoah Gyan, who memorably missed penalites in the 2010 World Cup quarter-final defeat in injury time against Uruguay and also during the 2012 CAN semi-final defeat against eventual champions Zambia, will again lead the attack.
