Augustine Makalakalane's decision to leave out two key players in his starting line-up on Thursday cost Banyana Banyana a spot at next year's World Cup in Germany.

Banyana were just one step away from World Cup qualification, but just as qualification history beckoned, the girls tripped at the last hurdle, losing to Equatorial Guinea in the semifinal of the African Women Championship.

Without Mamello Makhabane and Gabisile Hlumbane, the two players that Makalakalane surprisingly left out of the starting line-up, Banyana did not look like the same side that beat Mali 4-0 or narrowly lost 2-1 to Nigeria in the group stages.

The hosts did not play constructive football and as a result, Banyana will play no part in Sunday's final, but instead play Cameroon, who lost to Nigeria in the other semifinal played on Thursday, in the third place play-off match – a game that no one never really wants to play.
