Durban – Lower league Baroka FC have advanced to the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup after they shocked Premiership team Golden Arrows 2-0 in a round of 16 match at the Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The National First Division outfit went into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead after Kenoshi Motshegwa’s 45th minute strike. Loyiso Simandla then scored a second goal 15 minutes from time to secure Baroka’s passage into the last eight.

Arrows dominated the opening exchanges of the cup tie, and had quite a few chances to take the lead in the first quarter of the opening half.

Sibusiso Sibiya struck the upright in the seventh minute of the match after he was beautifully set-up by Nduduzo Sibeko. Three minutes later Andile Fikizolo hit his shot straight at the Baroka goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke after another great build up from the home side.

Baroka, though, managed to absorb the Arrows pressure and started to string together a few passes of their own. Simandla smashed a volley just wide in the 14th minute, before Motshegwa’s free kick attempt a few minutes later was expertly punched away by Ricardo Goss in the Arrows goal.

Goss then produced a great save to deny Siphamandla Sangweni from close range in the 25th minute.

Arrows then came close to opening the scoring in the 36th minute when Quincy Ngcobo took a quick free kick. However, Fikizolo’s shot sailed wide of the target.

Baroka were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position in the 39th minute when Kuda Mahachi brought down Sangweni just outside the box. Sangweni then tried his luck from long range, but his effort cleared the bar.

Baroka were awarded a penalty on the stroke of half-time after Musa Bilankulu fouled Donald Mokondelela inside the penalty area. Goss saved Motshegwa original penalty, but the striker then slotted the rebound to give his side a 1-0 lead at the break.

Arrows fought hard to get themselves back in the match, with Sibeko’s shot in the 54th minute deflected over the bar and Sibiya’s free kick attempt four minutes later easily dealt by Baroka goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke.

However, the National First Division outfit made sure of their progression to the next round in the 75th minute when Simandla scored their second goal from a rebound, after Goss had saved Sangweni effort.
