Munich – Bayern Munich has proposed that goal-line technology be used as soon as possible in top flight German football, the Bundesliga champions said Wednesday.
The proposal should be voted on at the next general meeting of the German Football League (DFL).
“We have this application today for the introduction of goal-line technology at the earliest possible date – only for the first division – because we need to protect football and especially the referees better in the future,” said Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
A previous proposal for goal-line technology was rejected by the 36 clubs from the first and second divisions in March with cost believed to be the main concern. The issue of cost is why Bayern are now proposing the technology be used only for top flight games.
The debate on goal-line technology rose to prominence once more in last Saturday’s German Cup final, when a header from Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels was seemingly cleared from behind the goal-line and the goal not given.
“It is intolerable the extent to which the referees, who cannot rely on replays, slow motion and even mathematical calculations can be publicly criticised,” added Rummenigge.
“This can and should be prevented in the future.” Goal-line technology is already used in the English Premier League and will be in place at the World Cup in Brazil next month. – Sapa-dpa
